Evening of ballets choreographed by Flemmung Flindt and Andrey Kaydanovskiy after Eugene Ionesco
The shocking banality of everyday life, the brutality of yawning boredom and the interchangeability of repetitive patterns of behaviour fascinated the creator of the Theatre of the Absurd, the most prominent of whom was the French-Romanian author Eugène Ionesco.
In response to the question of how it was possible for art to continue after the horrors of the Second World War, Ionesco deliberately inverted all theatre’s traditional dynamics. Even language was robbed of its original function and reduced purely to form – to a means of communication empty of meaning. The double bill of his plays ‘The Bald Prima Donna’ and ‘The Lesson’ became a classic of 20th century theatre. Now these pieces are performed together as ballets for the first time.
The Danish choreographer Flemming Flindt demonstrated as early as 1963 with his adaptation of ‘The Lesson’ what disruptive power Ionesco’s brilliant dialogues and absurd scenes could have when transposed into dance. This chamber piece about a ballet teacher and his pupil is answered by Andrey Kaydanovskiy, resident choreographer at the Bayerisches Staatsballett and nominated for the Prix Benois de la Danse 2021 with ‘Cecil Hotel’, with a new creation based on ‘The Bald Prima Donna’. He presents his work here on the stage of the Ballett am Rhein for the first time.
