Quick Info
In this Portuguese family, an unusual tradition exists: every year on 19th of May, the anniversary of the murder of the farm worker Catarina Eufémia by henchmen of the dictatorship, a fascist is killed. The day always begins as a cheerful family celebration and ends with the shooting of a delinquent. Here, injustice is apparently avenged. But this summer, there is unrest in the family. The youngest generation is questioning what has been celebrated for three generations. One daughter, a vegan, has recently refused to eat the festive meal (pig's trotters according to a family recipe), while the other refuses to participate in the ritual of shooting and doubts whether violence can ever be a legitimate means of defending freedom and democracy.
Portuguese author, actor and director Tiago Rodrigues has been head of the Festival d'Avignon since 2023 and has received international acclaim for his play Catarina e a beleza de matar fascistas. Slovenian director Mateja Koležnik, whose Bochum work Kinder der Sonne (Children of the Sun) was invited to the 2023 Theatertreffen, is now staging the play, which is full of moral pitfalls, in German for the first time.
