Circular Vertigo

Quick Info

Cologne-based company Overhead Project works at the intersection of dance and contemporary circus. In their latest work “Circular Vertigo,” dancer Mijin Kim performs a balancing act between the arts. In a duet directed by Tim Behren, the South Korean shines with a luminous performance full of physical expression and a commanding stage presence. Her partner: a 100 kg pommel horse, the stuff of school nightmares and a symbol of drill and competition in high-performance sports. A challenging opponent, but not for Mijin Kim. She approaches her stage partner with complete impartiality, discovering the apparatus with almost childlike amazement. Tirelessly and light-footedly, Mijin Kim works her way around her counterpart, who swings in circles through the air. Sometimes she is mischievous or provocative, sometimes full of defiant resistance.
Kim also embodies female empowerment within the history of the circus: starting in the 18th century, women were able to find a place in the circus as celebrated equestrians, far removed from traditional family roles. The strong, clear images are underscored by Simon Bauer's musical composition, an atmospheric blend of piano and electro that not only accompanies but also drives the action. Thus, the encounter between woman and object evolves into a delicate togetherness.
