Come In

Quick Info

Evening of ballets choreographed by Twyla Tharp and Aszure Barton

Canadian choreographer Aszure Barton has been creating works for both classical and contemporary companies for over 15 years, during which time she has continuously developed an elegant language that carries resonances of classical ballet while simultaneously exploring experimental approaches. As the inaugural Choreographer in Residence at the Baryshnikov Art Center in New York she created ‘Come In’ in 2006 for the ballet star Mikhail Baryshnikov and the Hell’s Kitchen Dance Company. To a score by Vladimir Martynov, Barton has given the world a quiet and poetic work that nevertheless has a powerful and lingering effect. Building on the foundations of a classical movement vocabulary, she asks how we want to live together and outlines a potential society where people co-exist peacefully and playfully.

Twyla Tharp, one of the great icons of American modern dance, also created a work for Mikhail Baryshnikov – albeit exactly 30 years before Aszure Barton: ‘Push Comes To Shove’ was created in 1976 and became one of Twyla Tharp’s greatest hits in a career that produced crossover creations that have been performed all over the globe. Just before her 80th birthday this still exuberant grande dame has created a world premiere for the Ballett am Rhein. She has devised a lively and dynamic piece to Terry Riley’s famous minimalist composition ‘In C’: a universal story of life that is a heroic journey through chaos and structure, through a world that finds itself in motion.
