"To bed, Nathanael! The sandman is coming, I can tell." Who is behind the heavy footsteps heard on many evenings? The encounter with the evil Sandman becomes a horror for the boy Nathanael. The idea that something dark is determining his fate burrows into him. When he believes that the Sandman is once again breaking into his life, the now adult student Nathanael gets deeper and deeper into the whirlpool of his inner images.
The secret, the night side, black romance, particularly interested the author E. T. A. Hoffmann: the world between a real world and a world behind it, in darkness.
