There are three important events in life: birth, death and a salary increase. Two of these are certain, but with the third, it is more than questionable how high the chances actually are. The question of a pay rise must nevertheless be asked, and Perec's proliferating text plays through all its possible variations and outcomes – literally all of them: Is the department head in his office?
