Ödön von Horvath’s folk play was first performed in 1931; and yet it describes a world that is very similar to ours today. Do we also live in a society that is fails to live up to its ideals? Many people flee into secluded areas where the world is still supposedly in order. Others clutch at straws that have long since snapped. We stagger serenely towards our fate, narrowly avoiding catastrophe – or are we already in the thick of it?
