2026 Theater an der Ruhr

Organismic democracy

Quick Info

Raffelberg Park is open to us humans for recreation: we use it and benefit from it and from nature. But who really lives in public green spaces, and who decides what happens there? Of course, the Parks Department… but you can also look at it another way: for it is precisely these questions that the ‘Organism Democracy’, established in 2019 on a derelict green space in the heart of Berlin, is finding entirely new answers to. All living beings in this

community – from snails and ash trees to root nodule bacteria – have the same political rights there, on this patch of earth. Since 2019, a Parliament of Living Beings has been meeting once or twice a year in Berlin’s Organism Democracy to decide what should happen to the site. From the more than 400 citizen species, 15 are selected by lot to participate in the Parliament of Living Beings as human representatives.

On a walk through Raffelberg Park with the initiators of the Berlin Organism Democracy, we’ll take a close look at who lives around the theatre and what claims each individual organism has within the park’s ecosystem. Along the way, we’ll have the workings of this unusual parliament explained to us.

Take up the cause of plants and insects and become an organism representative!
