A declaration of love to opera
According to an old superstition, one light always has to be left burning on stage – for the ghosts of the theatre. For a long time recently those ghosts have been the only ones present. Now, having seen how fragile their art is, performers will take to the stage once again, for you and for themselves, bringing with them their instruments, voices and experiences as their different trades slowly start to weave their magic.
Johannes Erath, who has used the graphic power of scenic images to explore the fault-lines of opera narratives at houses including the Bayerische Staatsoper, the Semperoper in Dresden, Oper Frankfurt and the Theater an der Wien, will devise a new evening for the Deutsche Oper am Rhein: a scenic and musical status report on the resurrection of the stage space and its many magical things, on what we have missed and regained, on the impossible possibilities of a stage kiss, varieties of intimacy, the enchantment of the first note and the stumbling blocks of social distancing on stage, teasingly presented with humour and theatrical trickery – or slapped down in a burst of sound. An evening about our great love of opera with the singers and orchestral musicians of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein.
A scenic evening by Johannes Erath with music by Puccini, Verdi, Wagner, Strauss, Offenbach and many more.
