BREL

Quick Info

A dialogue between dance and chanson

Jaques Brel’s (1929–1978) songs shaped the chanson genre – his oeuvre ranging from tender love songs to sharp criticism of society. But also Brel himself as a performer was a projection for an entire generation. In BREL, the iconic Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker (*1960) and the young dancer Solal Mariotte (*2001) search for a new form to express the power of Brel’s repertoire. De Keersmaeker grew up with Brel’s music, that embodies emotion, zest for life, and the zeitgeist of the 1950’s and 60’s. Mariotte, with a background in breakdance, stumbled upon Brel’s work and became fascinated by the power of his songs. BREL portrays three generations. Don’t expect an imitation or illustration of Brel himself, but a vulnerable and vibrant embodiment of his songs, tinged with humor.
