The room smells pleasantly of coffee. For most people, the smell of this popular beverage triggers positive thoughts: waking up in the morning, having cake in the afternoon, drinking it with pumpkin spice in the fall or the iced version in the summertime. Laia RiCa's performance "Coffee with Sugar?" draws attention to the darker side of coffee that we would rather forget or ignore. It is a tale of exploitation and colonialism that continues to this day. The performer poetically interweaves the history of coffee with her own biography. Laia RiCa grew up in El Salvador and Germany. She brings this biographical experience to the performance piece, as well as her experiences of being in-between: the struggle between two worlds, the constant suspicion of betrayal of her "roots", the questioning of self-perceived inferiority and superiority. And, last but not least, she poses the question of what to do with the knowledge of global injustice. "Coffee with Sugar? " is a theatrical performance that appeals to all senses, while it remains surprising and accessible throughout.
