Mit anderen Augen (With Other Eyes) is a collage made up of music, texts, images and sounds, immersing us in the world of blindness. We live in a society of the sighted. From “see you” and blind panic to love at first sight, our language is full of metaphors of vision. Wisdom and rationality are often associated with light and sight, while irrationality and lesser status may be linked to images of blindness and darkness. Blindness is rarely discussed and it is something most people do not think about because it does not affect them. Or they are afraid of it.
As a consequence, our world is built on sight. But what happens if this requirement is not achieved? In what space do blind and visually impaired people find themselves? What does time mean to them? What do sounds and noises tell them? Is it possible to see with your ears? These and other questions are examined in Mit anderen Augen.
In this musical evening, texts by blind and visually impaired people and the lyrics of the songs sung live steer the thoughts and perceptions of the audience away from the visual and towards other senses, such as hearing. Not as a replacement, but possibly a gain. Mit anderen Augen uses musical and acoustic means to explore seeing and not seeing and to create sensual experiences that transcend sight. As a matter of principle, blindness will not be acted out. The eight actors and musicians occupy a space that fluctuates between darkness, fuzziness, bright light and an absence of strong colours. The songs are directly linked both thematically and also associatively with sight and non-sight. The staging attempts to make the performance one that can also be experienced by unsighted members of the audience, including the use of audio description.
