In a time between past and future wars, between failed revolutions and flickering hopes, members of high and low society gather in the gambling den of Roulettenburg. They are bound together by a web of mutual dependencies: debt, intrigue, love, jealousy and, above all, money.
A penniless Russian general who has fallen for a supposed noblewoman from France; his stepdaughter Polina, whose secrets you would rather not know; the compliant tutor Alexei, who cannot refuse her any request; and all the shady characters from East and West who crowd around the casino tables: They are all waiting for redemption, whether in the form of a big win or the prospect of an inheritance that will solve all their problems at a stroke and throw open the door to the future. But when, instead of news of the death of the rich heiress, she suddenly appears herself and immediately falls prey to the rush of roulette, the game becomes an end in itself and the world shrinks to the absolute present of that little marble, which spins dizzyingly before coming to rest by chance.
