Meskerem Mees & Carlos Garbin
Blues and other touching stories
Meskerem Mees is an expert in soft sounds with big impact. The sophisticated simplicity and soothing voice of the 26-year-old Belgian won her the Montreux Jazz Talent Award. Together with Brazilian dancer and guitarist Carlos Garbin, she tells stories through the blues. The programme, which the two developed as music for Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker's dance creation EXIT ABOVE, is inspired by the tradition of so-called American “disastrous songs”. Carlos Garbin plays country blues guitar while Meskerem Mees sings about how music can help us overcome even the most difficult times, physically, spiritually, and mentally.
At Saturday's Relaxed Performance, Meskerem Mees takes the audience into her internal processand presents new compositions.

Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares
With resounding throats and radiant hearts
One of Bulgaria's best choirs has a French name: Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares. Their overwhelming, arcane and mystical soundscape inspires artists such as Kate Bush and Lady Gaga. For 70 years, the women's choir has shaped the cultural face of Bulgaria, presenting a repertoire from the Balkan region that has been passed down for generations in new, dynamic arrangements. After Swiss ethnologist Marcel Cellier brought the recordings of the former radio and television choir to the world scene in the 1980s, the ensemble, with its special timbre, has become an integral part of the global music landscape.
